Executive Producers extraordinaire Greer Shepard, Hunt Baldwin, and John Coveny along with some of the stars of Longmire took part in the Television Critics Association Netflix panel yesterday. You can read more about it here on Deadline.
One of the most magical nights of my life was spent at Green-wood Cemetery last July. I was part of the Moth's Main Stage show "Something is Eternal," hosted by Kurt Andersen. After the show, we got to tour the catacombs by lantern light. I've just uploaded the audio to my Moth page. It's the story of my son, Linus.
My friend Maddy is one of the coolest people I know. She approaches riders on the subway and asks them to write a poem -- free form, on the spot. A few say no; many more say yes. Some poems are really bad, some are transcendent, all are small acts of bravery and vulnerability. Earlier this year I wrote a poem for her birthday and today she included it on her site. Here's A Poem for Maddie. I spelled her name wrong. That's embarrassing!
Fourteen years ago I told a story at the Moth about my aunts Shirley and Elizabeth. This is the only photo I have of them. They were fixtures of my childhood -- loving us, spoiling us, using us to fight their proxy wars. As a girl, I'd lie in the dark on their back porch listening to stories about neighbors and long dead relatives, but they never spoke about themselves or their personal trials. Growing up in the 70s in this part of Virginia was like growing up in the 30s or the 1870s. Nothing changed. There was a iron hand pump in the back yard that I would work and work and work hoping to make water flow, but it never did. Still, every weekend of my girlhood I went back and pumped it. You never knew.
In the novel I'm working on, a lonely boy tries to save a Nigerian girl who is convinced she is a bak'in ciki or "soul eater" by making her this fermented Russian soup. Today I was writing in Brighton Beach and stopped into my favorite restaurant where the woman next to me was eating the soup I'd just been writing about. I'd never known it was on the menu. So I ordered some and it was delicious.
